Prunus nigra – The black plum is a fruit-bearing shrub native to Canada. An excellent pollinator for American plum varieties, it produces round, orange-red plums. Although the skin of its fruit is astringent, its flesh is very sweet. Some people enjoy the fruit as is, while others prefer to peel the skin before eating or cooking it. In addition to its superior hardiness, another of its best qualities is its resistance to black knot (or plum pox).

At maturity, this shrub is 10 to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide.

Black plum trees are self-fertile, but they benefit from the presence of other plum trees to increase their productivity. Plum blossoms are pollinated by insects, so warm, rain-free spring days are needed for the best harvests. Their abundant fruit production tends to alternate every other year, or even every three years.
