Buartnut (seedlings of *Juglans ailantifolia* var. *cordiformis* × *Juglans cinerea*): These seedlings, originating from Ottawa (zone 5), produce very vigorous and productive trees. The walnut combines the characteristics of the butternut and Japanese walnut. These trees are hardier than their Japanese parent and more resistant to the canker that decimates the butternut.

It adapts to various soil types, provided they are well-drained. Full sun exposure and deep soil are necessary for its growth and fruit production. It is ideal for windbreaks, permaculture orchards, or woodlands. The tree only casts partial shade under its leaves.

Its hard and rot-resistant wood has various uses. It is sought after in cabinetmaking as a substitute for black walnut wood for semi-luxury furniture, pianos, and sculptures. It is recommended to plant 6 to 10m apart for log harvesting and 15m apart for veneer production. Annual pruning is necessary to establish a good trunk. In the case of dense plantings, successive thinnings are necessary to maintain good growth.

Self-sterile. Ideal fruiting is achieved by planting at least two trees of different cultivars. The nuts of hybrid walnuts are tasty and have a unique flavor, fattier and less fragrant than black walnuts. They are reminiscent of Japanese walnuts and butternut. Their husks must be removed, they must be dried, and a nutcracker must be used to extract the kernels.
