Quercus Bicolor - Zone 4: The black oak, also known as blue oak, is a native but rare species in Quebec. Today's populations are found mainly along riverbanks, in regional parks, and in arboretums. Its large, shiny, dark green leaves give it a very ornamental appearance during the summer season. Its fruits are eaten by wildlife, especially wood ducks, for which these nuts make up 27% of their fall diet.

The swamp white oak prefers moist, deep, and acidic soils (pH 4.5 to 6), but it is also adaptable to various less acidic soil conditions. It can grow in full sun to partial shade, and its ability to withstand occasional flooding makes it well suited for riparian zones and wetlands.

Two-tone oak is prized by cabinetmakers for making high-quality furniture or flooring. It is also sought after for making whiskey barrels.

On average 16 meters high, but can reach up to 22 meters high, by 10 to 18 meters wide.

Bicolor oak flowers are wind-pollinated. The tree is partially self-fertile, but benefits from another bicolor oak to produce more acorns.
