Prunus armeniaca - Zone 5: The apricot tree is a fruit tree belonging to the plum family. It produces sweet, juicy fruit with flavors reminiscent of peaches and plums, depending on when the fruit is picked. When picked less ripe, its flavor is more vivid and tart than when picked very ripe, when it reveals a sweeter, honeyed flavor.

This small tree, suited to warm temperate climates, prefers well-drained soil and sunny exposure. Once well-established, it can tolerate occasional dry spells, but ensure it is well-watered to maximize production. We recommend cultivating it in a pH between 6 and 6.8.

At maturity, this fruit tree is 10 to 15 feet tall. As a prunus, this tree does not need to be grown with a single trunk. Its natural habit is more spreading. If your tree's trunk is exposed to direct southwest sunlight and still has smooth bark, it is best to paint it white with a solution of water and lime to prevent it from splitting due to sunburn.

Apricot trees are self-fertile, but they benefit from the presence of other apricot trees to increase their productivity. Apricot blossoms are pollinated by insects, so warm, rain-free spring days are needed for the best harvests. Their abundant fruit production tends to alternate every other year, or even every third year, as their blossoms are susceptible to spring frosts.
