Prunus persica - Zone 5b: The peach tree is a small, exotic-looking fruit tree that can be grown experimentally in southern Canada or in urban areas. Many Quebecers have been growing them for decades. In addition to having a short lifespan (15-20 years), peach trees' survival can be compromised by very cold winters below -32°C. To preserve and adapt peach trees to our northern climates, we recommend saving the seeds from your fruit and starting from seedlings.
Habitat
Habitat
Well-drained sandy soil rich in organic matter is your best ally for growing peach trees. They prefer slightly acidic pH levels around 6.5 and require annual rainfall of 900 mm.
Size and habit
Size and habit
Peach trees prefer to grow 10 to 12 feet apart and tend to grow up to 11.5 feet (3.5m) tall.
Pollination
Pollination
Although peach trees are self-fertile, they prefer to be accompanied by another different peach tree with similar flowering dates. Be careful, you should avoid getting two clones, i.e., two specimens of the same grafted variety, but two seedlings of the same variety will work.
